Abstract:
Population, in persons per square mile, of Montana from the 2000 Census. This data is a smoothed-over representation of Montana's population density surface, designed to emphasize small areas with high population density. It was derived from U.S. Census Bureau 2000 TIGER files and population counts. The original data was resampled to a 100-meter grid, smoothed, and the highest resulting density of the 100-meter cells in each 1-kilometer grid cell was assigned to the cell.

When comparing this data set to the similar data sets available from the State Library for the 1990 and 2010 Census, it is important to realize that the change of population density at a location is likely to be the result of a change in the configuration of the Census Blocks rather than a change in population density. The 2000 Census Block data is available at https://ftpgeoinfo.msl.mt.gov/Data/Spatial/NonMSDI/Collections/Census/cblock2000.zip.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute accuracy report:
Population is only known for U.S. Census Bureau Census Block areas, rather than continously, as someone might construe from this data set. The population density for a given location is a number equal to or smaller than the density of the most dense Census Block in the nearest 1000 meters. The actual population density at a given location may be much lower or higher, if the location is in an area farther from or closer to most of the people in a Census Block.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Original data was accurate to approximately 50 meters. The horizontal resolution of this data is 1000 meters.

Process step:
Convert 57 Montana TIGER files to Arc/Info format, dissolve polygons to create Census Blocks, combine to form a statewide data set, and relate Census Block numbers to the Public Law 94-171 files.

Calculate population density by dividing total population by area in square miles.
Process date: 2001
Process step:
Convert vector Census Block data to 100m grid cells based on population density. Set the value of each cell to be the mean value of each cell and its 81 nearest neighbors.
Arc/Info GRID commands:
setcell 100
grid1 = polygrid (s1,density)
s2 = focalmean (grid1,rectangle,9,9)
Process date: 11/05/2001
Process step:
Assign each cell the density of the highest of the 81 nearby cells.
Arc/Info GRID command:
s3 = focalmax (s2,rectangle,9,9)
Process date: 11/05/2001
Process step:
Resample the data from 100 meter resolution to 1000.
Arc/Info GRID commands:
setcell 1000
s4 = s3
